Wellington / Our advice
In the lead-up to the Outgames we'll introduce you to some of our team on this page. They'll let you in on their favourite things to do around Wellington.
Virginia Hopkins-Burns and David Hindley are the Co-chairs.
David's favourite night out is catching up with friends at one of the city's tiny character bars, then dinner at a Malaysian or Vietnamese restaurant around Cuba Street, the city's funkiest street. Cuba Street has everything from emerging fashion designers to great restaurants and even the city's best tattooist!
Virginia's favourite trip is taking the ferry across the harbour to the beachfront settlement of Day's Bay on a sparkling Sunday afternoon. "I like looking back at Wellington City from Kuini and Sacha's fine establishment - the Chocolate Dayz Café (amazing food and wine, sassy staff, and even a cigar or two)."
Karen Moses and David Huxford are the Co-Conveners in charge of the Sports Programme. They are both South Islanders.
Karen's favourite night out is meeting friends at women's night at Blondinis, an art deco bar, and then the degustation dinner at Martin Bossleys restaurant on the waterfront. Favourite day out in Wellington is "sailing on the beautiful Wellington harbour".
David's favourite night out is drinks at The Library, a tiny character bar on Courtenay Place - Wellington's entertainment hub - followed by dinner at Duke Carvell's restaurant. His favourite out-of-town day trip is to Castlepoint, a tiny village on the Wairarapa coast famous for its horse races on the beach. "Take a picnic lunch and climb Castlepoint hill".
Barry Taylor is Convener of the Human Rights Conference. He's another South Islander!
Barry's favourite night out in Wellington is dinner at Floriditas restaurant on Cuba Street, then a play at Circa Theatre and maybe a late night coffee at Midnight Espresso cafe. His favourite day out is walking along the South Coast to visit the seal colony on the beach at Red Rocks, or a visit to Zealandia (the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary).
What makes Wellington special? "It's a city with a heart, where its geographic beauty is as diverse as its people."
We'll introduce more of the team in coming months.
